Exporting a OpenCart feed to Google Merchant Center may be easy for some. But it’s not so easy for others, which is why extensions like Google Product Feed have become a favorite for many OpenCart users. With Google Product Feed for OpenCart, exporting the feed becomes so much easier that users have given the extension their highest ratings. Some customers have even commented that they have uploaded their feed with more than 13,000 products and they haven’t encountered any roadblocks at all.

Take note, though, that this is true only for some. Others, however, were not so fortunate. This is a common refrain: “I have 450 products, but only 27 have uploaded to Google Merchant Center.” You can change the number of products here, but basically with this problem you weren’t able to upload all of your products to Google Shopping.

The solution, though, is rather simple. Most of the time, you messed up with your product descriptions. You used at least one invalid character, but there may be more.

To be sure if this is the problem, here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Use Internet Explorer to open your feed. Go to the URL displayed by the Google Product Feed Module. This means you go to the admin control panel and select Extensions | Product Feeds. Then you edit the Google Product Feed. The URL will be in the mark that says Data Feed URL. It will look like http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php?route=feed/google_product_feed.

  2. The browser will then give you an error message: Internet Explorer cannot display this feed. This feed contains code errors.

  3. Click on the “More information” link. That will tell you the problem. For example, it can say that “An invalid character was found in text content. Line: 1270 Character: 30.” You’ll also find a snippet of the line where the mistake can be found.

  4. To find the product that’s causing the problem, you have to view the feed with a text editor that shows the line numbers. You can use Notepad++, which is a source code editor you can get for free.

  5. You have to use your browser to view the feed in its raw form. You can do that by right-clicking on the page in your browser and clicking “View Source” on the menu that pops up.

  6. The feed may automatically open with Notepad or some other editor which doesn’t have line numbers. Just select all the text in the editor, copy it, and then paste it on Notepad++.

  7. Find the error in the specified line and character.

  8. Edit the product page in OpenCart and correct the error. Don’t cut and paste the correction—just retype it.

One thing you need to remember, though, is that with Internet Explorer you only find the first error. Once you fix it, you’ll have to open the feed in your browser to make sure there are no more errors. If there is, then you’ll have to fix each one.
